BIG NEWS! In case you hadn't heard, Firefin Grill has taken up residence at the beautiful waterfront marina location that housed Carmine's Ocean Grill for many years. And owners Kenny & Rachelle (creators of The Twisted Tuna in Stuart) are on a mission!
FireFin Grill is a Chef-Driven specialty seafood restaurant and craft cocktail lounge serving locally sourced cuisine from state-of-the-art scratch kitchens. You'll find fresh seafood, award winning sushi, fine aged steaks and much more while sipping fine wine or a flavorful drink creation from highly trained mixologists.
But what's the mission? LIONFISH.
The Lionfish is a non-native species that is invading Florida waters. A showstopper in salt-water aquariums, the Lionfish has the potential to harm reef ecosystems because it is a top predator that competes for food and space with native fish such as Snapper and Grouper. Scientists fear that Lionfish will also kill off helpful species such as algae-eating Parrotfish, allowing seaweed to overtake the reefs. The Lionfish population is increasing rapidly because this invasive species has no known predators and they reproduce all year long. A mature female releases roughly two million eggs a year. So what is Firefin Grill doing to help? Cooking up Lionfish!
In 2010, NOAA began a campaign to encourage consumption of the fish. The "Lionfish as Food" campaign encourages that eating Lionfish could not only help to maintain a reasonable population density, but also provide an alternative fishing source to overfished populations such as Grouper and Snapper.
How does it taste? Lionfish is a mild, white fish that most people describe as "tender", "flakey", "buttery" and "delicious". It's actually one of the most delicious fish in the sea! And it's healthier than most other fish because Lionfish have a higher concentration of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, scoring above snapper and grouper as well as tilapia, Bluefin tuna, mahi, wahoo and other fish commonly served in restaurants. Lionfish are also very low in heavy metals like mercury and lead!
At Firefin Grill they are doing their part to popularize the consumption of this delicious predator because the only way to beat 'em is to eat 'em! They've contracted with local fishermen to bring in Lionfish while their expert chefs prepare it in the most delicious ways such as Fried Lionfish Fingers, Ceviche, Sushi, Blackened or Sauteed. You're gonna love it.
If you're not in the mood for seafood, the vast and varied menu has plenty of options ranging from a casual meal of Angus burgers or flatbreads to fine aged steaks and pasta. Open 'til the wee hours seven days a week, Firefin Grill is the new party place in town with live music and both indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the beautiful marina (where well behaved pets and smokers are welcome).
