Description
Rendez-Vous Bakery & Bistro is a cozy, friendly neighborhood restaurant. It's unpretentious and casual, with efficient, French-accented, utterly charming service. The inside boasts a display of gorgeous confections and comfy booths. But the sidewalk cafe stars, with patrons lingering over breakfast and gourmet sandwiches on house-made bread. Chef owner Zeimet comes from the Lorraine region of France, so it's no surprise that his quiches are terrific: creamy, not overly rich, the size of a small pie, with light puff pastry, served with mixed greens. Try one with spinach; chicken, tomatoes and herbs; or the legendary Lorraine, with chopped ham, bacon and Swiss.
At dinner, there's Trout Amandine, Beef Bourguignon and other wonderful, gently priced entrees to pair with equally affordable, mostly French, wines and bubbly. Tender, flavorful Lamb Navarin in hearty, wine-splashed stock with lots of veggies, stands out. It's not all rich sauces here. Try the feather-light, buttery croissants, or a Salade Niçoise of chunks of tuna, mixed greens, haricot verts, tomato, potato, hard-boiled egg and black olives with Dijonnaise dressing.
For dessert, the sumptuous Trio features layers of white, dark and milk chocolate mousse flanked by delicate chocolate slices, decorated with musical notes in gold script. The Gauguin is nearly too pretty to eat -- an orange marvel with passion fruit mousse, mango gelée and mango glaze. And colorful fruit tarts are certainly a treat -- like Rendez-Vous. Ask "New Times," who's awarded it "Best Breakfast Special," "Best Crepe," and "Best Steak Fries!"
